I just installed this in my truck and everything went very smoothly. If you are considering replacing just this encoder ring instead of the whole assembly here are a few notes (thanks to everyone who has posted on this topic already).Once the assembly is removed (see other comments on how to get the transfer case motor off the vehicle) it is a very simple matter to replace this ring. The additional time is less than 10 minutes. Here are some important tips:1- A tiny torx is required to remove six torx screws that sandwich this disk and three gear in between them. Lay the unit with the black stack sticking up on a clean flat work space.2- Remove six screws - 2 of 3 different lengths. The shortest just hold the halves together, the longer ones also hold the black stack thingy in place.3- Use a small screwdriver to pry the halves apart, and carefully lift the to half up past the black stack, roll it over and lay it side by side with the half that is...

This part is really a potentiometer with 2 carbon tracks. What happens is that over time, the rotor fingers vibrate at the same spot on the stator and wear off the resistive carbon. When I opened my original part, the areas where the fingers wore off the carbon allowed light to be seen through the ceramic base. Apparently, the intermittent connection between the fingers and the surrounding carbon confused the electronics causing random switching between modes. Lately, making a hard turn into a driveway kicked the system from 2WD to 4WD-Lo a few times. Trying to switch modes rarely worked. After installing this replacement, the transfer case is working great again. Quite straight forward to replace. See youtube video for details.Removing the front drive shaft (remove 2 bolts and loosen other 2 at front U-joint) allows much easier access for removing transfer case motor assembly. At the cable connector, remove the grey plastic lock first (it prevents the connector from...

Took a few hours to get it installed, but this encoder ring worked great! Had the 'Service 4WD' on the dash. Replaced the interior 4wd switch, no go. Of course it wasn't that for me!Did some research, found out that it may just be this part may correct the issue. As soon as I got it aligned, it worked instantly! Awesome price to fix a 4wd issue that has been going on for months! Thanks Dorman!
