Rover has a very brief history as an independent company manufacturing Rover parts and vehicles. In 1967, Rover became part of the Leyland Motor Corporation which already owned another model line. Just a short year after that Rovers parent company merged with British Motor Holdings to become the British Leyland Motor Corporation. This merges marked the beginning of the end for the independent Rover Company. Plagued by managerial and financial problems the history of Rover and Rover parts was lost in the turmoil.
In 1970, Rover combined its skill in producing comfortable saloons and the rugged Rover parts of the Land Rover 4x4 to produce the Range Rover. This was the first time Rover parts were used to combine off-road ability and comfortable versatility. Powered by the ex-Buick V8 engine, it had innovative Rover part features such as a permanent 4 wheel drive system, all-coil spring suspension and disc brakes on all wheels. The vehicle and it's Rover parts which would remain in production for 26 years was able to reach speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h), yet also capable of extreme off-road use, the original Range Rover design was to remain in production for the next 26 years.
Despite Rovers very limited lineup, the Rover brand continues to earn accolades for Rover parts and vehicles. Rover has always maintained a certain sense of ruggedness and adventure in its Rover parts designs. Currently there are a few Rover models available on the consumer market that continue to gain world wide acclaim.
Most recently the company's most popular model the Land Rover won two prestigious accolades; Rover parts outperformed a number of other vehicles to earn Best Compact SUV and Best Premium SUV by a popular auto review digest.
