With the arrival of the new Boxster S Black Edition in showrooms this year, Porsche’s entry-level convertible range is now complete and due to be replaced by a brand new model in the coming year, the 981-series.

These latest spy shots reveal a nearly completed prototype, which was spotted near Porsche's headquarters in Germany.

We can clearly see the new bumper designs for the new Boxster, including the integrated daytime running lights similar to those featured on the 2012 Porsche 911. There’s also more LED detailing found in the tail-lamps, which give off a stylized effect similar to the lights units used on the new 911 as well.


The overall size of the car appears to be slightly larger than the current model, though like the 911, which also grew, weight should be down thanks to increased use of aluminum and other lightweight materials in its construction.

Also going down should be the car’s engine displacement, with the most likely options being a new 2.7-liter flat-six in the standard Boxster and a 3.2-liter flat-six in the sportier Boxster S. Both engines are down 200 cc on the respective engines they replace. Expect output to be around 265 horsepower in the Boxster and 325 horsepower in the Boxster S.

Along with rumors of a revived 914, the new Boxster could certainly be fitted with a highly charged four-cylinder engine believed to be in the works at Porsche. If that’s the case, we're sure Porsche will still offer a six-cylinder option for upper range models.

    Wow, i hope the Cayman will come in those rims too, i love how the antennas stick out. Should be a $50,000 option, and i'll also add the $70,000 carbon ceramic brake upgrade too. :P

    It looks like the longer version of toyota MR2.This car looks pretty neat and decent.After reading this blog I am sure Porsche certainly does have the laziest design team.

    Porsche designers just can't stop churning out either crappy or carbon-copy designs, can they? Every time they have an original, it's the ugliest thing on the road (Cayenne, Panamera). And no, the Boxster/Cayman isn't original - they just took a 996 911 front and flipped it over for the back end. Check out some pics of the 996 911 and the original Boxster side-by-side - you'll see what I mean. Also, the Boxster Spyder's curvy engine hood looks great, but again, derivative - see Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky.

    oh dear....you were making good head way with your arguments there then you just went and threw it all away with your comparison of the spyders rear hood to the Pontiac...hahahaha try lookign at the 911 sporster from about 18 - 20 years ago. Or one of the old 917's from the 70's with the same hood. I think you will find that derivitiveness is lazy american knock offs of orginal designs.
    And Porsche has always been evolutionary in its design. Yet with each version of their cars there are massive fundamental changes that true car fans point out in an instant. people should stop hating on things they dont understand or care to appreciate. It jsut makes you look ignorant.

    Porsche has been in the dark ages in term of "new" cars to offer for the last 3 to 4 decades, I think updates/upgrades is better suited for printing when introducing another "next" 911/Boxter/Cayman.
