Nissan's Land Glider concept car leans like a motorcycle, looks like a squashed GT-R (video)
Motorcycles are about the most efficient (and fun) way to get around, but people in this country don't seem to care too much -- maybe worried about getting smeared all over the SUV of an eager commuter talking on his cellphone while eating breakfast and shaving. Nissan's Land Glider could offer that fun and that efficiency in what looks to be a slightly safer package. The zero-emissions electric car seats two in-line and is just 3.6-feet wide, utilizing motorcycle tires that dip on one side when turning to enable leans of up to 17 degrees. The Tokyo Motor Show is just a few weeks away, where this interesting concept will be on display -- and surely many others that are even more out there. Check out a video of this one tipping precariously just after the break.

well, you can add ESP for 500 EUR and it will fix it...
It appears they are driving in the bicycle lane? Another 25 MPH useless NEV...
That looks nothing like a squashed GT-R...
no but it does look like one of those cars from a widescreen anime being watched on a 4:3 TV....
The music made me feel like I was watching a David Lynch movie.
I don't think this would support my triple long, half-caf, low fat soy mocha with whip.
"Oh, snap"
What's with the eerie music?
Also, if they could get motorcycle tyres down to reasonable prices (less than $200+/tyre) and mileage - currently averaging 10,000miles before you need new tires! - this might be fun to drive.
That feels about as safe as my motorcycle...
Well, roadrash is less likely. Also chances are other drivers will actually see you. Unfortunately they'll also run you over because they'd be too busy laughing.
Your motorcycle has a roll cage?
Sorry, I agree this car is obviously very unsafe, but it's a lot safer than a motorcycle.
Motorcycles are a lot of fun, and they are fast, and some of them are very efficient (some are not), but bikes are pretty dangerous on most American roads. Compared to a bike, this thing is practically a tank.
+1 for the bobsled look!
I started the video and immediately wanted to adjust my aspect ratio.
that thing better have a real fancy cup-holder
But.. the aspect ratio IS wrong, isn't it?! I'm not quite sure any more.
If you squint, you can see him pedaling underneath.
Why do I get the feeling that everything in the video is only 2 feet tall?
@Windzilla
Why? Have you never been on an airplane before?
@Windzilla:
The car tilts to the angle of your coffee in corners. :D
Agh! Teh ugly! It burns my eyes!!!
Looks like they boosted their concept from this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdAaNU0FUrc
Not that it's a bad idea, but someone needs to mass produce these high mileage vehicles not just make a prototype.
that be current F1 standings leader Jesnson Button drivinf there
I think you mean championship leader......hopefully soon to lose to either Vettel or Barichello
Exactly what I thought!
kinda. that and other concept leaning(usually trikes) combined with Commutercars.com's Tango. Pretty awesome to me. Maybe they should throw in the Bose active suspension too.
I would worry a little about speed bumps and giant pot holes. None of which i saw in the videos. or any higway speed stuff :(
Similar architecture to the Dodge tomahawk. The articulating wheels. If only they stuck the Viper engine in that, THEN itll be worth something.
Besides the Nissan Logo, what part of this contraption looks like a GT-R to you?
i know, right?
maybe the incredibly kickass cockpit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onSd5dIsNDM&feature=player_embedded
proto cockpits are always excessive. wait till the production release, it won't have anything on the flintstone's
A squashed GTR? Uh.. yeah? Acid is not your friend.
I think it leans like a cholo...
In what world does this look even remotely like a GT-R?
WOW, I think this concept could add to making cars faster for racing. Who knows right? I ride a Ducati 848, and weight distribution means everything when going into corners fast.
Niiice, I want an 848 in pearl white. Not my next bike, but probably the one after that..
@Baby-G
Maybe for cars that have clearance, ie rally cars. But for F1?
Yes My bike is pearl white too!.... And his could work for making a new type of race car. I was just coming up with ideas in my head.
This is sort of like a bastard child of a Piaggio and a Sparrow: http://www.hightechscience.org/sparrow.htm
Well they just set a benchmark for ugliness.
The music on the video is so trippy. Could have added something else other than turm after turn and weird music for a whole 6 minutes. Arrgghhhh.....
Wow, check out the acceleration on that thing. We'll be overtaking people on unicycles no problem!
Looks squished, not squashed.
kinda reminds me of the mercedes concept car... F400-Carving
http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11591/Mercedes-Benz-F400-Carving-Concept.aspx
Awww.... that is what Optimus Prime looked like when we was a baby and drank powder oil.
Can't play hanky panky with your girlfriend sitting behind you!
never stopped your boyfriend
No room for around.
a Reach in Front....Hmm
Cool but I wish they went with a more conventional look for it. Looks to concepty.
Why are so many people bothered about the design? I'm more interested in the technology. Like Brunz said Mercedes showed a similar technology many years ago with the Carving F-400 but it never went anywhere. Also, being a competitive skier, I wonder if this leaning actually accelerates the car when it turns.
An uglified four wheeled rip off of the VentureOne.
What ever happened to that concept?
Totally taken from Minority Report.
great, i have to wash my only pair of jeans every night from coffee spil
Someone should fix the aspect ratio of that car image, it got stretched vertically.
If it leans like that, doesn't it just means it has really soft suspension? You can make any car "lean like a motorocycle"...
Exactly what I was thinking! Why in the world would I want the handling dynamics of an old Ford F-150 pickup truck???? I'd much rather take a stable, tight, race car like suspension, that doesn't exhibit any wobble thank you.
the driver isn't making the thing lean with his weight. it's mechanically done. even with a "soft suspension" you wouldn't be able to get the car to lean using body weight
Finally- a personal transportation vehicle that looks halfway safe and has pretty cool styling. Honda or Suzuki should have done this years ago. This is the type of vehicle that we should be driving to work instead of wasting three unoccupied seats like we do in most cars. I don't care if runs on gas or electricity, If it has a 250 mile range, can easily cruise at 75mph, has a decent stereo and cost less than $15K to buy you can sign me up tomorrow.
useless fenders are useless
pretty weird but i like. it could be useful oneday,
meh to all the haters, that thing looks awesome! Sure, it doesn't look conventional, but then I'd take futuristic over humdrum any day of the week.
very interesting but I would NOT want to work on it.
But is this Jamaica national bobsled team approved?
Instead of laughing at it, i'd rather give a big applause to Japs for developing such a beatifull futuristic concept, which is actually finalized and ready for production. Think of what we do in America? Making Chargers, Vettes, Mustangs. Engine sizes like 5.0 or 6.0 and U.S is pushing the world for global CO2 controlling, get real! What happened to the Chevy Volt? Nissan's and Toyota's already building "Volt" like cars on their production conveyors already... It is sad to see how dumb and stubborn people are...
You know, your anti american bigotry appears to have effected your learning. Ford and other American car makers like Tesla are very innovative.
You think it's funny to call Japanese people 'Japs' and bash America? It's just pathetic. You are too lazy to get out there and develop anything yourself, so you think bashing America is good enough to make you helpful. Nope. Nissan always has crazy tech demo ideas, and I love it, but if you really care about CO2 then it's up to you to develop an electric car. That's the American way.
It should be noted that GM has developed concept cars like this, along with electric vehicles that do indeed work, achieve over 200 mpg, etc. etc.
But the politics and corruption have them touting them only at auto-shows for decades, to be rolled back into the closet after every election year.
http://www.3wheelers.com/gmlean.html
They'll only get serious when its too late. Which, I believe... it is.
Looks like a Carver, which is what ended up inspiring Persu (the company's 3rd or 4th name). http://flytheroad.com/
I had been following that one for quite sometime but I doubt it's ever going to get made. I'd like to say I'm glad Nissan is working on something like this but it seems to be more of a tease since it's only a concept and car manufacturer's never seem to do anything with their cool concepts. Not to mention this one is kind of ugly.
Well, no one would buy this car (it would probably cost more than a nice BMW). That's why you don't see crazy concepts for sale. Nissan has a reputation for lots of technology that actually does make it into their expensive models.
I am excited to see them having fun with their work.
Ain't the music from panzer dragon saga? What's that doing in there
Awesome... till some snow and freezing rain gets in there.... fucs the mechanisms, or worse off, the paint and body work.
And that's why stuff like this will never work in N.A.
why didn't they show the flow of normal traffic, plus some freeway action. this place looks like abandoned.
These miniature cars would be OK if all other cars were similar weight. In an accident with a heavier car you'd be crushed. Basically you'd be the "air bag" for the seat.
FALSE: Version 2.0 of this car will do a barrel roll right out of the way of oncoming Suburbans. Press Z or R twice and flop flop flop... you're cruising away from the scene of the accident.
fantastic anti-show off idea ! this kind of product intelligence is unable to reach in the US...
it looks really fun to drive
Interesting concept, however, two things:
1. That thing has to be impossible to clean without the world's thinnest brush to fit between those exterior panels.
2. What happens if the road is banked incorrectly (it's very rare but not unheard of)? There's a turn like that here in my town that causes many dangers to motorcyclists and general motorists especially if the pavement is wet (even though you shouldn't be cycling in the rain anyway).
Anyway, my point is: While this is an intriguing concept, I just don't see a practical, safe use for it unless it's somehow incorporated into a theme park ride. ;)
Btw: I do agree that this would be really fun to drive. Don't get me wrong. :)
The soundtrack lulls you to sleep....not the best way to promote a car. If I want to ride on two wheels I pull my ATV up on its side and ride like a wild man.....
That's the cooling looking go-cart I've seen in quite some time. But its an ugly car.
Venture One, anyone?
This vehicle is only safer until the claustrophobia-induced hysterics start kicking in.
Holy f**k, that is one of the ugliest god damn cars I have ever seen.
...I kinda like it....
The video is hypnotizing...I want it.
Alternate ending clip for Blade Runner.
Where is Deckard's voice over? Did Ridely Scott delete it.
Wow, ye olde news
http://www.maxmatic.com/ttw_moto.htm
Tron Light Cycle
I hate that music.
Where are the clowns? I was expecting something like 20 to 30 clowns to pile out of the car at the end!
is this video to show how long that battery last?
It's like a really fat Carver.
Wonder if it can pop a willy too.
This thread is why I absolutely hate hate hate car people. Seriously, WTF? It's ugly? In what world? I'd love to drive this and no it doesn't need a viper engine or be able to drag-race some tard in a four banger who thinks the spoiler hotglued to the truck makes him Vin Diesel.. It looks like a lot of fun and damn the SUVs on the road.
Mmmm.... slanty.
