The Hummer commercial brand of vehicles and Hummer parts emerged from unique roots in the military industry. Hummers and Hummer parts were originally built by AM General Corporation, formerly the military and government vehicle division of American Motors. The company originally planned to launch a civilian version of the Hummer as far back as the late 1980s but it was almost twelve years before Hummer vehicles and Hummer parts were available on the market. The company received curious attention after Operation: Desert Storm; it was this phenomenon in 1992 that lead to the skyrocket in the automakers' popularity. AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Hum-Vee) to the public under the brand name "Hummer".The brand name Hummer was sold to General Motors but in 1998, but AM General Corporation continues to manufacture the vehicles and Hummer parts; however, GM is responsible for the marketing and distribution of all Hummers and Hummer parts produced by AM General. Since the inception of the first Hummer for the consumer market three new models (the H2, H3, and H4) were introduced.
Hummer exclusively produces of exceptionally large off-road vehicles and Hummer parts, and sport utility vehicles along with their respective Hummer parts. The core design of the H1 model is based on the now popular military workhorse the Humvee; with an exception in the exterior design, the majority of the components are identical to the Hummer parts used in the original vehicle. Only specialized Hummer parts and components (shock absorbers, tires, powertrain, engine, and suspension) along with the required supporting Hummer parts and mandatory safety equipment. Minor modifications are allowed to the powertrain, although the rules stipulate it must be based on the stock engine and transmission combination. The H1 differs from the Humvee in having a civilian interior, including trim, comfortable seats, stereo radio, and air conditioning as standard options and non combat Hummer parts. As a result of its commercial use, the best features introduced in the civilian Hummer have been incorporated into improved the military versions.
Hummer and Hummer parts are now marketed worldwide; however, this has been met with some resistance as the Hummer doesn't always meet environmental protection standards. Despite this, Hummers and Hummer parts continue to gain international success expanding into new markets. Hummer has partnered with importers and distributors in regions around the world. Most interestingly Hummer and Hummer parts are appearing in markets that do not have a history of favoring large vehicles.
Following suit with the majority of car makers, Hummer has also developed automobile technology and more efficient Hummer parts, which are more sustainable, and friendlier to the environment. In the near future Hummer will launch trucks that will run on Biofuel Powertrains.
